Out of 60,000 Tzofim (Israel Scouts) throughout Israel, only 50 are chosen annually for the Tzofim Summer Delegation. The selected 16 and 17-year-olds go through extensive interviews and intensive preparation before coming to the U.S. They have proven leadership experience, a broad knowledge of Israeli and Jewish history, a high level of scouting achievement, fluency in English and strong communication skills. Most of all, they have a love for their country and their people and a desire to share that love with their brothers and sisters in America. They will become Delegates - counselors or youth leaders in Jewish summer camps across North America, bringing the joy of Israeli Culture to North American Jewry.
Today, 22 different summer camps welcome Delegation members to assist in all facets of the camping experience each summer, specifically as counselors, scouting specialists and representatives of Israel. The Israel Scouts sent its first delegation of seven young people to the U.S. in 1958. These encounters planted the seeds that are being nurtured and cherished throughout North America nearly fifty years later. Delegates share their experiences and backgrounds with other counselors and campers, teaching them about Israel's culture and history through songs, dances, games and group discussions. Their unique enthusiasm, energy and passion bring a joyful Israeli spirit to camp. Through this, tens of thousands of Jewish American children have gained deep exposure and a meaningful bond to Israel, its people and its culture.
